Short answer: according to GOV.UK, once you have sent your Self Assessment tax return you can get evidence of your earnings (the "SA302") for the last 4 years, and you can get a tax year overview for any year. Lenders sometimes ask for these as evidence of income, for example for a mortgage if you are self-employed.

Printing your own documents

If you used HMRC's online services

Log in to your HMRC online account, go to "Self Assessment", then "More details about your Self Assessment returns and payments".

If you used commercial software

Use the software to print your tax calculation; it may be called something different, for example "tax computation". You can still print a tax year overview from your HMRC online account. Contact the software company if you have trouble printing.

If you have a problem

GOV.UK says you can contact HMRC if you have problems getting the documents.

Example (made-up numbers)

A sole trader files her 2025-26 return on a Monday. Her mortgage broker asks for the SA302 on the Wednesday. Because 72 hours have not passed, she waits until the Thursday before trying to print it.

Timing tip

The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year. If you are planning to apply for a mortgage, filing early is possible: see key dates. If you later need to correct a filed return, see changing a return; the documents you print will then reflect the changes.

FAQ

Is a tax year overview the same as an SA302? GOV.UK lists them as two different documents; the overview is available for any year.

Do all lenders accept printouts? GOV.UK says to check with your provider.
